Guava, Bayabas

Guava leaves decoction mouthwash (bayabas in tagalog) herbal mediactions.

Treatments for Swollen Gums and Mouth Inflammation:

  • Boil one cup of chopped fresh leaves in 2 glasses of water for 10 minutes. Strain and cool.
  • Use the decoction for hot salt gargle or mouthwash every after meals.

Swollen Gums and Mouth Inflammation

          Swollen gums or stomatitis is an inflammation of the soft tissues of the mouth.

Water Treatments:
1.  Hot salt gargle, 3 times a day before meals.
2.  Massage gums with clean fingers every after hot salt gargle.
3.  Brush teeth with soft tooth brush. Brush teeth every after meals.
4.  Drink at least 4 glasses of fruit juice during the day.
5.  See the dentist for gum swelling and the physician for mouth infections.

Procedure (hot salt gargle):
a. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a glass of hot water. Temperature should be as hot as can be tolerated for drinking. Stir with teaspoon till salt is melted.
b. Salt gargle should be done in the bathroom sink.
c. Sip enough water and let it roll freely in the throat for a few seconds before spewing the water out into the sink.
d. Continue the procedure of throat gargle till all the 2 glasses of salt solution is consumed.
e. If sore throat is severe with harsh voice, salt gargle may be repeated every two hours when awake.
f. Throat gargle is best done after meals.
g. For best result, don’t drink cold drinks until sore throat is healed.

Guava, Bayabas

Guava leaves (bayabas in tagalog) herbal medications.

Treatments for Sunburn and Prickly Heat:
  • If there is infection, boil 1 cup of chopped leaves in one gallon of water. Add 2 gallons of cold water.
  • Bathe with this decoction.

Purslane, Alusiman

Purslane leaves (alusiman in tagalog) herbal medications.

Treatments for Sunburn and Prickly Heat:
  • Extract juice from the leaves.
  • Apply on the prickly heat after the starch bath.

Sunburn and Prickly Heat

       Sunburn or erythema is a redness of the skin occurring in patches of variable sizes and shapes due to excessive exposure to sunlight.

Water Treatments:
1.  Starch Bath daily for 3-5 days.
2.  Bathe with rain water. Powder with starch or gewgaw after the bath.

Procedure (starch bath):
a.  Fill up the tub 2/3 full with warm water. Water should be deep enough to immerse the affected areas. Use bath tub if whole body is affected.
b.  Melt the starch in cold water in a small basin. Mix well the melted starch into the tub of water.
c.  Undress the patient and assist him into the tub.
d.  With the face towel, bathe the parts not interested. Wet the head or hair if the scalp is affected. Immerse patient for 20 minutes, but do not rub him with the towel.
e.  After 20 minutes, drain the water and pat dry the patient with dry towel. Don’t give shower or rinse the starch. Don’t use soap even for washing hands, unless a specific soap is ordered by the physician.
f.  Keep patient warm and avoid chilling.
g.  Give daily bath or twice a day, depending upon the patient’s condition.

Coues Blumei Benth, Mayana

Coues Bluemei Benth leaves poultice (mayana in tagalog) herbal medications.

Treatments for Sprained Ankle or Wrist:
  • Crush 10 leaves.
  • Apply directly as poultice for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.

Gliridia Sepium (jacq.) Steud, Kakawate

Gliridia Sepium (jacq.) Steud leaves poultice (kakawate in tagalog) herbal medications.

Treatments for Sprained Ankle or Wrist:
  • Crush 10 leaves.
  • Apply directly as poultice for 30 minutes, 3 times a day. Use bandage to hold the poultice in palace.
